Chhering mutup was born in Likar village of leh district of ladakh at the northern region of Kashmir. Due to inadequate education facilities, he was unable to go for proper education. He joined Indian army as an infantry solider on 23rd June, 1965 in ladakh scouts.
21st February, 1985 , the Pakistani armed force taking advantage of inconspicuousness and continuous bad weather intruded and inhabited the topknot having a view of our post at an altitude ranging near around 18000 feet. Lance Havildar Mutup was a commander of a fighting guard led by Major M.S. Dahiya which was undertaking operation to evict the enemy.
During that time, L/Hav Mutup manifested the most outstanding courage hold initiative and self-possession.
Lance Havildar Chhering Mutup thus set the most conspicuous example for his gallantry, cool courage and devotion towards duty of an extraordinary high order.
