Lance Naik Albert Ekka: A Hero of the 1971 War

Lance Naik Albert Ekka, PVC (27 December 1942 – 3 December 1971), epitomizes selfless courage. Born in Jari village, Gumla district (present-day Jharkhand), Ekka enlisted in the Indian Army’s Bihar Regiment at age 19 and later joined the newly raised 14th Battalion, Brigade of the Guards. When war erupted in December 1971, his unit was tasked with capturing the strategic position of Gangasagar (Hilli) to protect Agartala and advance into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

History of the Feat

On 3 December 1971, Ekka’s company encountered fierce enemy fire while securing a railway embankment near Gangasagar. Enemy positions bristled with light machine guns and fortified bunkers, pinning down his comrades. Recognizing the grave situation, Ekka crawled under heavy fire, lobbed grenades into an LMG post, and single-handedly neutralized it, silencing the gun that had been decimating his platoon. Despite being wounded, he continued forward, pressed home a bayonet charge, and shattered the enemy’s defensive line.

His actions broke the backbone of the opposition at a critical moment, enabling his company to capture the objective and safeguard the flank of the IV Corps. Although he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, Ekka’s valorous stand turned the tide of battle, saving countless lives and contributing directly to India’s decisive victory.

Honors and Legacy

For this supreme sacrifice, he received India’s highest wartime honor: the Param Vir Chakra. His citation praises “undaunted courage, leadership, and self-sacrifice in the face of the enemy.”

Albert Ekka’s memory lives on through multiple tributes:

  • Param Vir Chakra: Conferred posthumously on 29 January 1972.
  • Postal Stamp (2000): Released on India’s Golden Jubilee of Republic Day.
  • Albert Ekka Chowk (Ranchi): A major intersection named in his honor, complete with his statue.
  • Albert Ekka Block (Gumla): A district subdivision bearing his name.
  • Eco Park (Tripura): Dedicated to the battle that saved Agartala.
